Guidelines are as simple as this:

Cheap (cheaper is better, but let’s call the ceiling $3,500)

Can handle all manner of horrible muddy fields filled with tall winter wheat (number one priority above all; field access is horrendous)

Durable, easy to repair, most parts available at a local auto parts store

Hit me with what you guys have. I have a bunch of ideas but I can’t whittle them down.

Some old Ford 0 from the 70's though the late 90's.

If somebody tells you a Subaru or a wagon, they are wrong.

Seriously though, is an 8N a reasonable vehicle to rely upon and use? They’re beautiful and relatively cheap and reason tells me that they should be perfect for my needs, but tractors just aren’t my field of expertise here.

Old fullsize Chevy Blazer with 2-4" lift kit and mud terrain tires. There are a lot of them out there and not crazy expensive. keeping the lift reasonable lets you fit a good sized tire without breaking driveshafts and whatnot due to steep angles. Going with old blazer means somebody already built it and it just works.

Also I chose Blazer over pickup just because I prefer the enclosed style. If you are truly loading shit in the back of it (manure), you probably want a pickup, in which case a slightly newer silverado type truck will do fine.

Maybe something along the lines of an old 4x4 Ranger?*

*Edit: Sorry, I thought you were talking about a vehicle to get you to/from the equipment in the field.

Long-term goals for the land include a homebrewed rallycross track, so the clapped out Subaru will appear at some point, but not at first.

Any and all of the above, but the more multi-purpose the thing is the better, but also feel free to get creative with what multi-purpose means.

The 8N is pretty simple to work on, and pretty reliable. They aren’t very powerful, and they lack 4wd to pull themselves out of really nasty crap, Plenty of repair parts available, and a lot of it is automotive since it’s a gas engine, not diesel... but if you want a loader, or other specialty attachment, good luck...

What’s your intended use?

I would say a gmt400 truck. Dead simple, cheap as chips and pretty reliable. if you get a 3/4 ton you get decent clearance and steer clear of the wimpy 4l60

I’m not saying a side-by-side is a bad choice here, most farmers I know have at least one. With that being said, I’d think any relatively rust-free 4x4 pickup you could find for your budget would do the job.

On the one hand, ‘47-’52, which was quite a long time ago. On the other hand, most popular small tractor of all time. Given that I can type in “ford 8n parts” and among the first things that come up are a whole carburetor ($89, new), a replacement front cowl (new, $100), and an engine rebuild kit ($264), I’m quite sure there are worse ways to go. I was being mostly facetious, but that’s not necessarily the same thing as wrong.

Intended use is kind of a do-it all vehicle, but things actually on the radar right now are:

1) Something to traverse a field that has a really nasty drainage issue in the middle of it that’s made a mess of a variety of newer 4wd vehicles on varying degrees of street-oriented tires

2) Something to aid in stump and brush removal along about a quarter mile of creek that needs to be cleaned out.

3) Aiding in the building of a perimeter road around the land to allow lesser vehicles to get deeper into the property.

4) Hauling around just about anything else around 100 acres, potentially getting vehicles unstuck (this shouldn’t be an issue if I’m around, yet we’re still having this conversation)

5) Potentially, and this is the attraction of a tractor, mowing about 30 acres. We have someone to handle mowing on our fields currently, but my brother and I are likely going to commandeer one of the fields shortly and it’d be nice to be able to take care of everything ourselves.

Yeah I think I want more than a side-by-side, I would like something with some mild towing and stump-pulling power for doing cleanup around the land.

Dig that front-end loader because we do have some grading that needs to be done, but I’m leaning towards something with PTO. A couple of those 70s 3600s have popped up in my search, I’m intrigued.

For everything short of a tractor mower/harrow/scraping/etc. role, my dad has used a Terramite T5 baby backhoe for about 20 years. Might well be outside your price range, though. Weighs something like 3000lb, I think - 2wd but fairly hard to get stuck.

Honda Fourtax Foreman. This thing will go anywhere, and if you don’t need much power they can be had brand new for around $4k.

The basic thing is, if you need a tractor, it’s hard to beat. Everything else on the edge of what a tractor can do, might be good to get something else to go *with* a good tractor.

That’s really my conundrum. Most of my needs don’t require a tractor, but I like the idea of the flexibility, but I don’t like doing things because I like the idea of it.

My dad started out on his property with a baby bulldozer, sold it, got a tiny 4wd two-cylinder diesel Kubota to scrape the road with, and on needing to do more, went for the Terramite. More recently, we’ve been playing with a baby (Japanese) 4wd Deere with some attachments, but any actual digging or stumping, the Terramite just makes better sense than anything we’d be able to get for the Deere.

2nd gen Tracker on snow-rated all terrains. The 1st gen has a more robust steering system, but the 2nd gen has more power, a better heater, and a more roomy 4 door version.

XJ. I used mine a lot on the farm when I lived in MN. I’ve used it to heard cattle across plowed, frozen fields in January with ridiculous wind chills, I’ve used it to haul bales of hay, I’ve pulled loaded hay racks and gravity wagons, blasted through snow drifts, bombed along miles and miles of gravel roads... It’s like a UTV with heat and air conditioning and a real engine for waaaaaay less money. Very cheap and easy to work on, and handles abuse and neglect like no other.

A Terramite is just out range of what I really want to spend, but that honestly seems about perfect for my needs at the moment. We don’t have any roads/paths on the property as it sits and that’s job one in my book, along with clearing out an overgrown creek, so a small loader/backhoe of some type + a beat to shit pickup is probably what makes most sense.

...and then, once you have things to mow and roads to keep scraped, fences to make post holes for, etc. etc., then it’s time to go ham looking for an 8N and toys. Probably.

Even the four door version is only about 13 feet and 7 inches long, and the 4x4 Gen 2 Trackers have 8" of clearance and low range.

ZR2 models have engine and transfer case skid plates, as well as a little bit wider track, and the usual flares and stripes of “lifestyle” SUV packages of the era.

ZR2 4 doors and all LTs have the Suzuki 2.5 liter 24 valve V6 which runs a timing chain (no issues of deferred belt maintenance), and still has great parts availability since it was sold in a “Chevrolet” vehicle. If the local shop doesn’t have it in stock, invest in Amazon Prime. Free 2 day shipping on car parts, and if you live in the US, you’ll be able to watch non-pirated episodes of The Grand Tour as a perk.

I hope this helps.
